THE ARCHIVE OF HELL
Hackles, Techie Stuff November 26th, 2006After purging myself with the following screed, I had an idea. Blogger allows you to set up a secret email address to a blog, which, if you send to, will generate a blog post from whatever email you send. I think I have seen some blogs that incorporate this functionality in conjunction with programs that create what would seem like a rational english post but is truly only an algorythmically created robot message advertizing some service [yes, reading the next article I will link, some people abuse human-created content from others by outright stealing blog posts through xml newsfeeds, and mixing their little spam messages into the posts!] Well, certain of email addresses in my administration have been DESTROYED by spammers. Who send shameless messages. And sometimes outright useless gobledy-gook. So let’s at least have a public record somewhere to display all the shame of it.
I’ll set up a blog with a secret email publishing address, but then make an exclusive effort to get that email address onto spam-lists. Mind, I’m not talking about opt-ins. I’m talking places that either outright nab and abuse your email or feign to allow you to opt-out, but really only keep you opted-in. I have no doubt that all kinds of lurid and stupid subjects will be posted to this automatic spam blog. But that’s part of the point. It’s THE ARCHIVE OF HELL.
So, here is that blog. http://hell-archive.blogspot.com. It is an archive of spam. Sick of unstopped and unwanted garbage email? Recieved any nasty private comments from people? Forward it to hell.archive@gmail.com and I may forwarded it to that blog.. it won’t publish the email or identify of any sender, and only post it under the name "Hell". Or, if you’re feeling creative and want to generate the murmurs, complaints or gripes of a person in hell, go ahead and send them there.
I realize this may just give the spammers what they want - more exposure and higher web rankings because their links are posted there. I hope that this is only a marginal benefit to them in comparison to being officially posted in THE ARCHIVE OF HELL. On the other hand, can the shameless be shamed? Maybe not. But at least they can be laughed at. And if any fool follows the links in those spams, that’s their loss. And.. the spammer’s sick gain.
Side note - I think I’ll add this spam blogger deterrent to my film blog, and also this Movable Type blog if someone has implemented such a plugin for Movable Type.
[Now, screed ahead. You may dismiss this unpleasantry without a further read if you wish.]
That obvious subject header aside, when you start getting spam messages advertizing spam filtering software, THAT IS THE LOWEST DEPTH OF EVIL.
My wife is getting such emails! - along with a thousand other garbage and often truly lurid messages in her email account at this web site.
Some spammers have intercepted my email at this domain and sent out junk mail with a false "from" header with my email address. That also is very evil. It is an abuse of another’s good name.
I have an autoresponder set on that address to anyone sending to me with complaints for messages that spammers sent under my name and which I never sent. It explains that situation, says I’m sorry if it troubles them, but that I think spammers should be more sorry, and I don’t believe God will let any spammer into heaven for one second without groveling apologies and penance to each and every victim of their spam. And I mean that.
At least we can get gmail. Their spam-detection is amazingly good. But nothing in this world ever remains innocent in my experience. I have a private email that I send only to family and friends from, which you would expect to remain free from outside impingements. Except that someone (and everyone knows who) forwards anything of the remotest interest (did you know SQUIRRELS have TEETH? AMAZING!) cc to their entire extremely long email list, so everyone on it can see everyone else’s addresses. And it turns out some folks either on that list or other folks that folks on that list forward the message to - doubtless inline with all thousand emails displayed like a glorious roccoco nude - DO EVIL THINGS. I know this because shortly after such a witless forward occured, MY PRIVATE EMAIL began receiving lurid spams. LURID! (and thank God gmail knows this, or I’d have to change my email address again - again, gmail’s spam filtering is supreme) I think the six degrees of separation theory is bunk - I think everyone in the world is only three degrees of separation away from HUGH HEFNER. Or at times you really wouldn’t wish for, only two or one.
And meanwhile, email addresses of ours from this domain which we should rightfully be able to use in freedom from such spamming abuses ARE DESTROYED.
The spammers win. For now. But there will be hell to pay. If God has it in his vengeful heart (and Vengeance is mine, saith the LORD) to burn the wicked as stubble, I think it would not be a stretch to suppose He’ll make the spammers grovel.
